Five Simple Steps to Music Video Marketing
Feb 2011 01

How music videos can promote more than just an artist

Music videos took the world by storm in the early 80’s when MTV killed the radio star. But music videos have since grown to a major marketing platform and artistic outlet for creative minds.

Now I’m not here to give you the official history of music video but I am here to tell you how to get yourself a nice piece of art to represent you and your band/company/cause.

The five essentials of music video production

First

Find the right song for your video:

If you’re using your own song this part should be fairly easy; but if you are making a video for an organization you will need to license a song.

Another great option is to find musicians who are already looking to get exposure and split the cost of the video or hire them to be the talent. This will give you a marketing advantage as the artist will be marketing your ad along with you.

Second

Find the right budget for your music video:

Find out how much you are willing to spend and remember getting play for your video can also be a cost.

Music videos can cost anywhere from 5k to 200k+ so be diligent in your budgeting and let your production team know exactly how much you’re willing to spend.

If you already have a concept for your video you will need to ask the production team how much it will cost to pull it off.

Third

Find a good production team:

These are the people who are taking your production from start to finish so they need to be reliable and good at what they do.

Generally when you think “talent” you are thinking of actors, singers, etc. But the talent behind the camera: directors, producers, editors, etc. are the talent who get your video looking the way you want it.

Make sure to watch their reel to ensure the quality.

Fourth

Get yourself a creative music video treatment.

Treatments are what the written concept is called in the music video world; and without one the production team will have no idea what you want. This is where the winners are separated from the losers.

Creative, well thought-out music videos are viewed over and over again because of their novelty. If your video fails to catch the attention of your audience your video is guaranteed to end up un-viewed.

The treatment is also a rough outline of where the budget is going. If your production team is coming up with the creative content you can give them a budget guideline and they can write your treatment with the monetary restrictions in mind.

Fifth

Post production placement: getting your video seen:

After your video is out you will need to put it on youtube, facebook, vimeo, myspace and any other social media you can think of. You will also need a good press release to send to TV stations, Radio stations, etc. Many times your Record Label or Production Company can help you with this.
